Alaskan King Salmon
Alaska's Deshka River is home for large runs of king and silver salmon, as well as plentiful rainbow trout. In June, the water is
dropping and the kings are thick, perfect conditions to cast for the fish of your dreams.
Whether you fly fish or spin cast, the fishing can be spectacular. Kings in the 20 pound class are average and many in the 30's will test your skill and put a smile on your face. When you are not fighting a
fish, there is plenty of scenery and wildlife to enjoy. It's not uncommon to see eagles, beavers, moose and even an occasional bear along the banks of the river.
Fishing for kings doesn't take a lot of finesse. The idea is to get your fly or lure in the fish's face and then when he hits, set the hook hard and hold on. There is nothing quite like the hook set on a fresh king. Explosive can be an understatement. Don't be surprised if you lose a few before you get the hang of it.
When these big fish run, they really run.
You can stay at the Schwager Haus B&B located on Gene Lake near
the Deshka Landing. Cozy cabins sleep 2-4 guests and each cabin has a private bathroom. You'll enjoy home cooked gourmet meals and beautiful scenery when you're not out on the water.
