Olypmic Peninsula Steelhead

Washington Fishing

There are two steelhead "seasons" in Washington. The best time for summer runs is July-November in South Central and Eastern Washington. The summer fish are mostly hatchery and the best way to catch them is with gear/bait. The fall fish (October and November) are mostly wild fish and they are great on the fly rod. Summer is a WAY better time to fish for consistency and good weather. (Hatchery Steelhead are the only steelhead I will keep/kill. All wild fish go back.)

The other "season" is for winter runs and I fish on the Olympic Peninsula during prime time. I usually head out there in February and fish until the rivers close on April 15th. The fish are mostly wild and range up to 30 pounds. This is world class steelhead fishing BUT it is WINTER steelhead fishing. The weather is unpredictable and the water can go out of shape quickly (meaning no fishing). If you hit it right, it is truly unbelievable. A two or three day trip on the Peninsula gives you a better chance of hitting a great day. Olympic Peninsula Steelhead!I can show you some spectacular water and help you hook some of these spectacular fish. In Washington, I also fish for trout and salmon depending on the season.

In between fishing for steelhead I fish the Yakima River for trout. The Yakima is a world-class fishery by itself. Great weather, consistent water and good fishing, make the Yakima a great trip but is also a good back-up plan or add-on day for out of state fishermen. The only downside is, it's not steelhead fishing... A day or two for steelhead and/or a day (or two) on the Yakima would be a great summer/fall trip.

Give me a call and I can tell you what's hot and we can plan a trip today!
